A show I think that deserves a shoutout is called Everything is Going to Be Okay. Highly recommend it! The main character is played by an autistic actress and the show's creator later came out as being autistic! However, my favorite autistic fictional character has to be Abed from Community portraited by Danny Pudi. While Abed is played by a neurotypical actor, he is just so well written to me. I also agree with Ramon on Atypical. The first season was just way too stereotypical autism for me, but by the second season, the show got alot better and I was happy to see actually autistic actors play other autistic characters in the show (many of them I've actually worked with). I'm curious to hear more on both of your thoughts on Netflix's Love on the Spectrum (mainly the US version).
I haven't seen any of the shows you brought up, but I do think you bring up a good point that you can't expect one character to represent everyone in that demographic. It's like you say: you met one autistic; you met ONE autistic.
I really like the show Leverage, which has a canon autistic character [Parker] (not stated directly in the show, but the creators said so before the first airing). I'm not sure what exactly the genre would be, but basically it's a found-family procedural drama about non-superpowered/real-world vigilantes. I also like the show White Collar, which has a non-canon almost-certainly-autistic character [Mozzie] who displays some less-commonly-portrayed-traits, like echolalia, in a way that isn't all-encompassing. They both do fall into the trap of "otherising" or "trying to fix" that person sometimes, but that is ignorable and the fandoms, if not the writers, all embrace and love these characters, quirks and all. There's also Gilmore Girls which has a probably-autistic main character (indicated by his own traits as well as family member's traits) who is just a person -- and cornerstone of the community -- who sometimes acts out of the norm or struggles with things like communication, but mostly just lives life [Luke Danes] (as well as another more stereotyped autistic character [Kirk]). And I could list of speculated on more. While it can be annoying to have a portrayal relegated to head canon, there are actually plenty of obviously or almost-certainly autistic characters in media which are never canonically confirmed as such. I think one of the major problems with autistic "representation" is that characters in media will, be design, be exaggerated versions of what they are meant to portray -- that's what makes them interesting, and, ironically, one factor leading to accidentally "representation" -- but that can be a trap when the show is meant to be about autism specifically, since they end up making everything about an exaggerated version of it. It's also very difficult to show something highly internal on screen. There are also a plethora or cartoon characters who show traits of autism (again, because cartooons & animation especially tend to have exaggerated or unique characters)
I was just writing a discussion post on disability in the media (I’m getting my masters in assistive technology) and I ended up mentioning a book by Ann M. Martin (famous for the babysitters club books) called Rain Reign. I have zero idea if the main character is portrayed correctly as autistic but I can tell you for sure how good the portrayal of ablest were. Sorry I did mention about UA-cam demonizationing your videos (I didn’t say yours specifically) because of the word autism in it. That surprised at least one of my classmates. The rest might not have read my post
I think the two of you having a more in-depth discussion on dating would be cool, there aren't too many examples out there, at least from what I've seen, of Autistic men being successful in hetero relationships (in both my personal life and amongst the Autistic YTers I watch I've noticed it's mainly Autistic women with NT or occasionally non-Autistic-but-otherwise-ND men), and so many straight and hetero-preferring bi Autistic men struggle with it (see Aaron's Journal here on YT for a great example), and many join incel communities because of it. I think there is a real need for more infrastructure to help bring Autistic people together to meet each other like the LGBTQ+ community seems to have.
The media does not really talk about Autism unfortunately or portray all sides of it despite being autistic myself. Especially with things like Sheldon Cooper showing autistic signs in certain episodes despite not officially being diagnosed with autism in Big Bang Theory or Young Sheldon. Also, Goofy from the Mickey Mouse series is shown to be autistic and is shown to be a bit of a joke.
Ramon’s perspective about the concept of a savant reminds me of an Einstein quote: “Everybody is a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, then it will believe for its whole life that it is stupid.”
But why you dont and he dont speak about being very very disabled too. Autism is that too.
"You will see us in the next one." Ever since the video where you explained why you say that instead of what a lot of other content creators say -"I'll/we'll see you in the next one" - every time I watch a video and someone says the latter, I always correct them out loud, because, ever since you explained your reasoning in that video long ago, it drives me insane whenever someone says the latter phrase.
Lol, you're welcome :)
Redarding Ramon’s final statement: nah i’m no savant. My brain doesn’t do anything amazing and that’s fine
It seems disrespectful to disagree with you, so I’ll try not to do that. However, I am not convinced by your statement. I still think “If you haven’t seen it, it’s because you haven’t seen it… It’s there.“
Everyone's good at something. I don't know if I agree with my dad that everyone is a savant, but everyone is good at something.
I didn’t realize you’d uploaded lately. Congratulations to you and Jess on becoming parents! I’m so, so happy for you two!
Thanks! I'm trying to get back in the habit.
So glad you are back !
Good to be back!
I have epilepsy and atisaum and have an MEDICAL ALERT ASSINANCE DOG I banged my head of the tiled floor with no wornning for having a epileptic seizure
Wow i had forgotten how funny Nathan’s dad is 😂 Welcome back!
He is a hoot! Thanks!
Glad you're back. Also congrats on being a father. I hope I can be one.
Thanks! I hope you can as well! It's pretty great!

Congrats again! I wish nothing but the best for you, Jess, and your baby girl.
Congrats on becoming a father!
Thank you! It's been wonderful so far!
This is really amazing. Hilarious, educational, with such a sense of community and togetherness. I missed your videos!
Wonderful! Thanks! We have at least two more on the way. We are going to see how this format is received.
Congrats on becoming a dad
Thanks so much! It's been wonderful so far!
I’m so happy your back. I just did an acronym assignment that I picked ASD and I messed up on my source. Lucky I had to write a paragraph so I relooked at my source and I changed the source quickly
Good to have you back!!
Appreciated it! Welcome back to you as well!
He's back!
Thanks! Good to be back!
I struggle with knowing how honest to be as well.
I am autistic and I love cathing up with people.
I love firm hand shakes.
I hate lying so I say " I am chugging along". When I am asked how I'm doing or something else that can be taken negatively or positively.
I like parties but with people who understand me and allow me to get my needs meet.
I was scared of getting help because my roommate was judging me for not having my diagnosis yet, once they found out I was going through the process they kicked me out of the sharehouse
fellow autistic here good to see a video like this thought i was alone with this problem lol
I recently dropped out of college because of autistic burnout but i'm kinda regretting it... might go back despite everyone saying it took me too much energy
Im thinking of the same. Have you decided what to do yet?
@@jasminer.6721 No I have not, I am going to have a chat with my old teacher to go over my options for possibly doing 2 or 3 days at school and the rest from home
Do you have a masters degree to be able to teach at a college? I really want to do that too but everyone tells me I need more education
You need at least a master's degree. That's what I have.
It's pretty cute how he puts her scrunchy back on her wrist 😂
I want to share about a herbal recommendations I got about Dr Oyalo on UA-cam and his herbal remedy which work perfectly on my sons autism. speech and social skill has improved till now.

I asked Google "does Nathaniel Bandy have a girlfriend?" And this showed up instead lol. Anyway, I'm not surprised by NB's diagnosis in the slightest.
I always wondered why his skin looked so messed up in that scene lol thank you.
I’m not actually sad about this.
"Is that a drug dog" then run , yep that is why my cop buddies sometimes hang with me
I get why people might have issues with ABA, because of its history and also because not all professionals use the techniques properly. But there are skills taught in this method that really help make life easier for autistic individuals themselves, and can even prevent dangerous behaviors (like this one time I helped a girl who ended up in the hospital with a head injury because she'd hit her head on the floor when she didn’t get what she wanted; had behavioral intervention started earlier, it might never have come to that). Those criticizing ABA should really look into the Denver model of early intervention and realize that these days, the best-trained professionals are looking out for the autistic person’s best interests first. Sometimes, they need extra support to pick up skills that will make life easier and are necessary for future tasks. The goal isn't (or at least shouldn't be) to force the kid to be something they're not, to make them mask their autism or anything like that. It's really about expanding their abilities to their fullest potential and reducing behaviors that are harmful to them or others. We're talking about encouraging alternative behaviors that serve the same purpose but don’t hurt anyone.

I hate to be the guy who has to say this, but its because so many of our cops are gun nut republicans that this type of thing happens so much
That’s so beautiful 🙏❤️
4 years after the video was created and I’m totally caught up on the word ‘preceding’ from the second example. Like it can’t be the meals preceding this one from then on because it means before, not after. One of my big issues when I was a kid was getting in trouble for correcting my teachers. Kindergarten to second grade, this was constantly an issue. While I’m much better at the understanding that language comes from a place of privilege, it’s also still hard for me to move forward without getting hung up on it. Since my iPad has horrible autocorrect and my eyesight isn’t what it once was, this creates so much frustration. Oh, and I totally only order one meal at any place and it’s best if it’s either majorly specialized or excessively simple depending on the location. I can’t eat it if they get it wrong. I’m also one who gets up two hours early to arrive late. AuDHD. The time blindness is strong with this one. Hubby and I also do the joke quotes. I don’t remember specific places for songs, but I think that’s because it’s then on repeat thereafter for a few weeks. My current is Gary Newman “Broken.” On week two and I’m not tired of it yet. And I wear the same shirts repeatedly, but NT parents? Heh. No. The tiptoe walk I’ve done since I started walking. Trying to stop after age 40 made for foot pain. I’m so going to watch the other videos you have.
TY! I'm searching for hope after this happening to me.
I just found you through my son’s speech therapist and wanted to say thank you for making this video! Opened my eyes to a couple things 😊

this is good

Hi
Thank you bro, I am a conservative at heart.. and I would laugh at the concept of "microaggression".. However, the context of this clip... I completely understand . Goodvibes.
a wonderfully compassionate video. i'm likely going to be starting a new job within the month and i'm terrified of changing my routine after three years. it's going to lead to wonderful things, i know it is, but there is still that lingering anxiety. i'll definitely try your tips, so thank you, from one Nathan to another!
Are you still friends with Nathaniel bandy
I appreciate you making this! I have a PTSD SDIT, and was just diagnosed with Autism, so I've been curious about how my pup could aid with that as will.
